HOME COOKED DIETS

Dogs and cats can consume a home cooked diet that is balanced with all essential nutrients required for optimal health. Special considerations must be accounted for when feeding a cooked diet. The diet guidelines for home cooked diets vary depending on multiple factors such as species, life stage, calcium ingredient selected, and the diet's primary energy source.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Many photos of raw meals look too "perfect" o ๐Ÿ‘‰ Many photos of raw meals look too "perfect" or "pretty" which can overwhelm pet parents who are considering a raw diet for their pet. Although these photos are a great example to show individual ingredients in a meal, it is an unrealistic view of everyday life for the majority of raw feeders. Therefore we created Messy Bowl Monday as a way to showcase real life examples of raw meals for dogs and cats!

๐Ÿพ Today's meal for Hannah's 2 year old Australian Shepherd mix, Nolo. Nolo is around 33lbs and currently consumes around 850kcal from DIY meals, and an additional 250 - 300kcal from balanced air-dried food used during training.

๐Ÿš The amount of carbohydrates sometimes included in a balanced homemade diet, is not even remotely close to the amount that is in normal or grain-free kibble.

๐ŸŸข @drkarenbecker said it best- "The end result of excessive plant-based fillers in pet foods can be a chronic amino acid deficiency from not enough meat-based protein in pet foods, which can lead to heart and other organ dysfunction (as well as many other issues).

Pet food companies pointing fingers at specific ingredients (like peas) is a deflection of the root problem: there are too many plant-based ingredients and not enough real meat in many pet foods on the market."

๐ŸŒŸ Liver is a secreting organ that can be used t ๐ŸŒŸ Liver is a secreting organ that can be used to fulfill the โ€œliverโ€ ratio in PMR & BARF raw diets. All liver is uniquely concentrated in Vitamin A in the form of retinol. It is also packed with B vitamins & other minerals that will vary based on the species of liver. Liver is a highly important component to homemade diets & is not easy to replace.

๐Ÿฅ• While orange vegetables contain Vitamin A, it is in the form of Beta-carotene. Dogs & cats do not convert beta-carotene into retinol very well, therefore, it is essential to provide enough retinol to meet nutritional requirements.

3๏ธโƒฃ Liver can be divided into 3 categories: Ruminant, Non-ruminant, & Waterfowl. Below are a few examples of each type:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Ruminant: Beef or Lamb
๐Ÿ‘‰ Non-ruminant: Chicken, Turkey or Pork
๐Ÿ‘‰ Waterfowl: Duck

๐Ÿ„ Ruminant liver is notable for providing plenty of copper in addition to Vitamin A. Beef liver is higher in copper than lamb.

๐Ÿ’Š Non-ruminant liver will provide vitamin A, as well as, higher levels of biotin. A copper supplement will be required for healthy pets when this type of liver is fed exclusively. Non-ruminant liver can be useful for pets with liver conditions that require a professionally formulated low copper diet.

๐Ÿฆ† Waterfowl liver differs from the other 2 categories in its unique nutritional profile. Duck liver is extremely high in vitamin A, in addition to being high in iron. It also provides moderate copper levels.

โš ๏ธ We recommend using waterfowl liver sparingly in DIY diets, in rotation with other types of liver, due to itโ€™s high levels of vitamin A & iron. If duck liver is all that can be used, it is recommended to have the diet formulated by a professional.

๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› The amount of liver can vary in professionally formulated diets. Sometimes 2-3% for adult pets, meets nutritional requirements. However, the average guideline for DIY diets is 5% liver for adult pets & 7% liver for puppies/kittens.

๐Ÿ“Š Feeding Guide per 1000kcal:

๐Ÿˆ Kitten: 1.4oz (40g)

๐Ÿ“Š Feeding Guide per 1 pound (453g) of food:
๐Ÿ• Adult Dog: 0.8oz (23g)
๐Ÿ• Puppy: 1.1oz (32g)
๐Ÿˆ Adult Cat: 0.8oz (23g)
๐Ÿˆ Kitten: 1.1oz (32g)
